'An Instinct For Murder' by Chris Boucher

The year is 2027. When a swimmer is found drowned, the police computer rules the man's death as accidental. However, Chief Superintendent Nathan Spring's natural instinct for murder and distrust of computers lead him to suspect otherwise, and he begins an investigation into the case, despite the disinterest of his colleagues and the objections of his superiors. Against his wishes, Spring then finds himself manipulated into taking a job that he does not want, as commander of the International Space Police Force, nicknamed the 'Star Cops'. Arriving at the European space station Charles de Gaulle, Spring meets American David Theroux, a fellow star cop who informs him that several crewmembers have been recently killed after their spacesuit backpacks malfunctioned. Although these apparent accidents fall well below statistical acceptability, Spring suspects the work of a saboteur aboard the station. In the course of his enquiries he decides to expose the criminal by taking a desperate course of action - by gambling with his very life…
